We believe that most Volkswagen ID.4 owners may never own or even drive an electric car. Therefore, we have compiled a comprehensive Volkswagen ID.4 charging video, explaining everything from simple household level 1 charging to public DC fast charging.
Because there are different connectors and different power supplies, we need to point out that this video is made specifically for the North American market.Although there are many overlaps, due to differences, the charging experience of European ID.4 customers will be slightly different.
ID.4 can accept up to 11kW of power from a 48-ampere Class 2 charging source. However, Volkswagen only offers 120-volt level 1 EVSE, which can provide a vehicle with slightly more than 1 kW of power. Therefore, most ID.4 owners may choose to purchase a more powerful Class 2 240V household EVSE for daily charging.
When we plugged in the level 1 EVSE provided with the vehicle, ID.4 reported that it was charging at 2 miles per hour, which was almost as expected. Then we plugged in 16 amps, 32 amps, 40 amps, and finally 48 amp level 2 chargers. ID.4 reports charging at 10, 20, 27, and 32 miles per hour, respect.
We know that not everyone needs to listen to our introduction to some of the more basic aspects of electric car charging, so we have included various timestamps below. Therefore, those who would rather skip some basic knowledge of EV charging can choose.
Then we explain how DC fast charging works, the different connectors currently in use, and why it is important to download apps such as PlugShare and Chargeway. These applications can help ID.4 car owners find a working DC fast charging station, and will not be drawn to CHAdeMO-only DC fast charging stations when charging is needed.
We also explained how they can use the Tesla Destination charger with the right-sized Tesla to J1772 adapter, and how to arrange charging to take advantage of the time-sharing power plan.
So please check the video and let us know if we missed something. We will make these charging deep dive videos when all new electric cars are on the market, so if we need to add anything in future versions, please let us know. Please keep in mind that this is a very long video and we deliberately slowed it down, so even those who are completely unfamiliar with EV charging can keep up.As always, please let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
